Supporting farmers through Mushroom cultivation in Rukiga District, South Western Uganda

In July 2024, with the support of the International Crane Foundation, we successfully conducted a mushroom cultivation training program for farmer groups in Rukiga District. This initiative was designed to equip local communities with the skills and knowledge needed to diversify their income sources while promoting environmental sustainability hence preserving the natural habitat for the grey crowned crane.

The training program offered both theoretical and practical sessions, covering essential topics such as substrate identification, sorting, fermentation and pasteurization, inoculation, dark room and grow room management and post harvest handling. Participants were guided through each step of the process, ensuring they gained the confidence and skills needed to start their own mushroom cultivation projects.

By focusing on small-scale farmers, this initiative has promoted self-reliance and contributed to the economic development of the Rukiga District. The training also aligns with environmental conservation efforts, as mushroom cultivation requires minimal land and promotes the use of agricultural waste products.

The International Crane Foundation provided critical support for this initiative, recognizing the important link between sustainable livelihoods and environmental conservation. By supporting local communities, we are also contributing to the protection of the region’s rich biodiversity.

As we continue to nurture growth both in our fields and communities, we invite you to learn more about our ongoing efforts.
